2025 Fundraising for Local Foodbank
Every year In Search of Ann Walker fundraises for the local foodbank. We do this to carry on Ann's wishes to give money to feed the people of Lightcliffe at Christmas in her will.
John Walker, Senior
Early Family Ann Walker’s father, John, was the fourth child born to William and Elizabeth (née Caygill) Walker and was baptized in 1753.1 His siblings were Mary (1747-1822),2 William (1749-1804),3 Elizabeth (1750-1829)4 and Ann (1757-1847).5 William Walker was a wealthy worsted manufacturer and also served as a Justice of the Peace for West Riding.6 John’s mother Elizabeth died in 17677 and his father William many years later in 1786.8 Marriage & Children John married Mary Edwards in 1795 at St. John the Baptist Church in Halifax.1 Mary was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (née Lees) Edwards of Halifax. John lived at Crownest, his family’s estate and Mary at Pyenest.…

Continuing the charitable tradition begun by William & Ann Walker Ann Walker’s Will Ann wrote her final will in 1841[1]. It was proved in May 1854, shortly after she died. Apart from several specific bequests and legacies, her entire estate was left to her nephew Evan Charles Sutherland. Evan was, in fact, the secondary beneficiary: in the will Ann specified her eldest nephew, George Sackville Sutherland, as the primary beneficiary. But as “little Sackville” had died in 1843 (between the date of Ann’s will and her death) the estate passed to Evan. He was baptised in Lightcliffe on 3rd March 1748.1 Elizabeth Caygill was William’s father’s second wife, as his father’s first wife, Mary Wainhouse of Pye Nest, died after 7 or 8 weeks of marriage.2 Elizabeth Caygill was the sister of John Caygill, who donated the land where the Piece Hall was built.
