Breakfasted & left Martigny about 9 – on ascending mountan [mountain] overtook another guide with two mules, he mounted one of ours up the hill, & an English gent[leman] who promised to give him 10 francs – stopped at Inn on Tete Noire – heard gent[leman] buying some minerals – Lady Guilford. bought a rock on Tete Noire, where are inscribed some verses in french, badly translated into English – arrived at Chamouni about 7.30 – dearest went to a Naturalist & order a complete collection of plants – [gap] which is to be ready next July – she saw also Joseph Coute [Couttet] – who said he was going next day with a Princess to Martigny – washed dearest gloves –
